Strangely, there is no information on the founders of this city. Some say it was founded by the Achaeans from the Peloponnese around the 10th century BC, while others claim that it was founded by the Phoenicians around the 9th century BC. In any case, it was, for many centuries, one of the ten kingdoms of Cyprus.
In the 7th century the city was fortified by the Byzantines who built the original Kyrenia castle (later enlarged by the Lusignano and Venetians).
Under the Ottomans, Kyrenia remained a minor port. The British built a harbour and a quay, and the city became a resting place for its picturesque location, its beautiful harbour and romantic atmosphere. In fact, this town is probably the best tourist area in Northern Cyprus.
Kyrenia, often referred to as a tourism paradise, is a rare and ideal place for a relaxing holiday. The restaurants and bars surrounding its old horseshoe-shaped harbour serve tourists in a unique atmosphere. This tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats, is framed by the Crusader castle.
The former carob warehouses have been transformed into restaurants and shops, giving the port a lively atmosphere, but without haste and crowding.
There are many places of interest to visit. In Kyrenia itself, probably the most spectacular is the castle and shipwreck museum. Just 5 km from Girne, a visit to the Lusignano Bellapais abbey, dating back to the 14th century, is a must, while slightly farther away is the fairytale castle of Saint Hilarion.
